With the awareness of limited resources and the actual impact of climate change, 16 pioneers in the construction and real estate industry established the German Council for Sustainable Building-DGNB eV in 2007. The aim is to further promote sustainable construction in the future. DGNB currently has more than 1,200 member organizations worldwide, representing the entire construction and real estate value chain: architects, builders, investors, planners, communities and scientists.

Sustainable construction means consciously handling and using existing resources, minimizing energy consumption and protecting the environment. The common concept of sustainability is based on a three-pillar model, including: economic, ecological and social issues. This idea can also be transferred to architecture. Economy refers to our belief that construction has economic significance throughout its life cycle. Ecological simplification is used for resource and environmentally friendly buildings. The focus of society is the user of the building. When these three dimensions are coordinated, sustainable actions can be stated. However, DGNB's concept of sustainable development goes a step further, focusing on six themes in total. In addition to ecological, economic and social cultural and functional aspects, technology, process and location also play a role in the planning and construction of buildings.

Sustainable construction not only means using new and reusable building materials, such as recyclable concrete, but also means consciously choosing regional components and materials to reduce energy requirements or avoid high transportation costs. Whether it is a residential building or an office building: we all want to feel comfortable, because ultimately the building we live in plays a vital role in our sense of quality of life. It starts from the design, and goes to the room with high temperature, the best indoor air, ideal lighting and sound insulation. But accessibility planning is also an important aspect of sustainability.

The above aspects, from the use of certain materials to the consideration of feel-good factors: all these standards play a role in the evaluation of the building and ultimately determine the sustainability of the building. In order to objectively evaluate and describe the sustainability of buildings and dormitories, the form of the DGNB certification system is unique because it evaluates the overall quality of the entire building's life cycle for 50 years. Depending on the type of building, up to 40 sustainability criteria are included in the assessment, which are continuously developed by a team of independent experts. Depending on the level of achievement of these standards, DGNB issues platinum, gold, silver or bronze certificates. However, with the DGNB system, in addition to simply mapping the status quo, more goals have to be achieved. It should promote the establishment of sustainable buildings and act as a way of life in the long term.

In terms of sustainable development, especially sustainable construction, prejudice still exists, the so-called high cost. However, you should take another look and compare the different products available. Surprisingly, products that meet sustainability standards are generally not more expensive. Those who make the final decision consciously can even save money in the end. These products have paid off over a period of time because they ensure long-term operations at lower costs.
